چکیده

The paper addresses the problem of line-of-sight (LOS) vs. non-line-of-sight (NLOS) propagation link identification in ultrawideband (UWB) wireless networks, which is necessary for improving the accuracy of radiolocation and positioning applications. A LOS/NLOS likelihood hypothesis testing approach is applied based on exploiting distinctive statistical features of the channel impulse response (CIR) using parameters related to the “skewness” of the CIR and its root mean square (RMS) delay spread. A log-normal fit is presented for the probability densities of the CIR parameters. Simulation results show that different environments (residential, office, outdoor, etc.) have measurable differences in their CIR parameters’ statistics, which is then exploited in determining the nature of the propagation channels. Correct LOS/NLOS channel identification rates exceeding 90% are shown to be achievable for most types of environments. Additional improvement is also obtained by combining both CIR skewness and RMS delay statistics. Keywords—Ultra-wideband, propagation, line-of-sight, non-lineof-sight, identification.

U Indoor Multipath Wireless Channel Experimental Characterization Utilizing Time Domain Techniques

In this paper an experimental characterization of a typical indoor wireless propagation channel is performed. This channel characterization is needed for short range applications (<10m), utilizing Ultra-Wideband Impulse Radio (UWB-IR) techniques. Both the line of sight (LOS) and the non line of sight (NLOS) scenarios are taken into account. The characterization is done using time domain measure...

Non-line-of-sight identification in ultra-wideband systems based on received signal statistics

Non-line-of-sight (NLOS) propagation can severely degrade the reliability of communication and localisation accuracy in indoor ultra-wideband (UWB) ‘location-aware’ networks. Link adaptation and NLOS bias mitigation techniques have respectively been proposed to alleviate these effects, but implicitly rely on the ability to accurately distinguish between LOS and NLOS propagation scenarios. A sta...

Two Novel Methods for Accurate NLOS Detection Based on Channel Statistics

Time-of-arrival (TOA) estimation is the first step of the most positioning algorithms. However in various environments especially when ultra wideband (UWB) pulses are used, TOA extraction from the received signal is challenging. UWB radio propagation bears multipath phenomenon, therefore correct identification of the first path TOA highly depends on the statistical characteristics of the enviro...

Ultra-wideband Propagation Loss Around a Human Body in Various Surrounding Environments

Ultra-wideband (UWB) technologies have been anticipated for use in wireless body area networks (WBAN) because of their low power consumption and anti-multipath capabilities. This chapter presents the UWB (3.1–10.6 GHz) propagation loss in WBAN scenarios between on-body antennas in three different surrounding environments. The measurements were performed in a 3-m radio anechoic chamber, a classr...

Experimental Investigation on Time Reversal Precoding for Space-Time Focusing in Wireless Communications

This work presents the results of indoor wideband measurements investigating the spacetime properties of wireless signal transmission with online time reversal precoding. The measurements were conducted using a new time-reversal wideband MIMO channel sounder operating at 2.45 GHz with a bandwidth of 240 MHz. Both line of sight and non line of sight propagation conditions were investigated. Spat...
